THREE VIE FOR UVA PRESIDENCY

A University of Virginia law professor and the presidents of the universities of Georgia and Connecticut have emerged as finalists to succeed Robert O'Neil as president of UVa, said a report published Tuesday.

School officials who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Daily Progress of Charlottesville that University of Georgia President Charles Knapp is the top contender for the position.

Knapp has acknowledged that he is under consideration.

The other two contenders identified by the newspaper were John T. Casteen III, president of the University of Connecticut and a former Virginia secretary of education in the Cabinet of then-Gov. Charles Robb, and UVa law professor Richard A. Merrill.
