CATTLE ON VA. FARMS SHOW 2% INCREASE

The number of cattle in Virginia on Jan. 1 was 2 percent higher than a year ago, reversing a decline under way since 1987, the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service reported.

The number of farms with cattle continues to decrease, however. Farms with cattle were 1,000 less than the 37,000 reported in 1988.

Prices of slaughter and feeder cattle are not expected to increase in the next six months, the service said. Prices may dip in the early spring but over the long term are expected to hold current levels. - Staff report
