WESTVACO SALES UP, INCOME DOWN 5%

During the annual stockholders meeting of Westvaco Corp. in New York this week, the company reported a 5 percent decline in net income and a 5.6 percent rise in sales for its first quarter ending Jan. 31. The company blamed lower earnings on the cold weather in December and a temporary interruption of production at a large paper machine, not at the Covington mill.

John Luke, company president, said the board has a new environment committee and the company's programs assure that its manufacturing processes "are protective of the environment surrounding our facilities and the health of our communities." - Staff report
