VIRGINIA STANDOUT CHOSEN TOP PLAYERS

Virginia's Bryant Stith, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, has been voted player of the year and heads the all-District 3B team as selected by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Stith led the Cavaliers to a 17-10 record and a 6-8 finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference and became only the eighth Virginia player ever selected to the all-conference first team.

Stith, the ACC rookie of the year as a freshman, averaged 20.4 points and 6.8 rebounds during the regular season while shooting 48 percent from the floor and 77.9 from the free-throw line.

Clemson's Cliff Ellis was voted coach of the year after guiding the Tigers to a 23-7 overall mark. Clemson won the ACC regular-season race with a 10-4 record, the first time the Tigers have ever finished atop the league standings.

Joining Stith on the all-District team are Rodney Monroe and Chris Corchiani of North Carolina State; Christian Laettner and Phil Henderson of Duke; Elden Campbell and Dale Davis of Clemson; Tony Massenburg of Maryland; Bimbo Coles of Virginia Tech; Rick Fox of North Carolina; and Steve Hood of James Madison.

Coles is the all-time leading scorer for Tech, the Metro Conference and Virginia Division I schools. The Hokies' guard also is only the fifth Metro player ever selected first-team all-conference three times. He averaged 25.5 points per game while shooting about 40 percent from the field during the regular season.

Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia comprise District 3B. Voting was done by district members of the USBWA.
