AT LEAST 5 DEAD IN RIOTS IN S. AFRICA

Police today fired on thousands of protesters who attacked and burned government buildings in the black homeland of Bophuthatswana. Five people were reported killed and up to 500 injured.

The clash began after up to 50,000 protesters in the nominally independent homeland - the second to erupt in violence in four days - attempted to stage a march to demand its reintegration into South Africa and the resignation of the territory's president.

The new violence erupted as South African troops restored order in the Ciskei homeland on the southeastern coast after rioting in the wake of a military coup. South African officials said Ciskei was calm.
