31 INDICTED IN DRUG PROBE IN BOTETOURT

Thirty-one prople - most of them residents of Botetourt County - have been indicted on drug charges as a result of a five-month undercover investigation by Botetourt County sheriff's deputies.

The charges ranged from distribution of marijuana to conspiracy to distribute cocaine and conspiracy to manufacture crack cocaine, Sheriff Norman Sprinkle said Tuesday.

Twenty-three of the 31 people had been arrested by Tuesday afternoon, and authorities were searching for the others, the sheriff said.

Small amounts of drugs and several automobiles were seized in the investigation, which began in October 1989, he said.

Sprinkle said he did not want to release the names of those charged until all of the suspects were arrested.

Arraignments are scheduled for March 22.
