SCIENTIST AND LAWYER SHARE TEMPLETON PRIZE

An Australian scientist who sees links between science and faith and a Hindu lawyer who started communities for lepers in India were named winners today of the Templeton Prize for progress in religion.

Biologist-geneticist Charles Birch and Murlidhar Devidas Amte will share the $580,000 prize, the largest made in any field.

Previous winners have included Mother Teresa, evangelist Billy Graham and Soviet exile-writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
