HAITIAN BLOOD-DONOR BAN DRAWS PROTESTS

Thousands of Haitian-Americans protested the new federal ban on blood donations by Haitians, saying the AIDS prevention policy would increase discrimination against them.

The Food and Drug Administration responded by promising to consult with Haitian-Americans and convene a public meeting of its Blood Products Advisory Committee to discuss the issue.

The policy announced last month is designed to help keep AIDS-tainted blood out of the nation's supply by requiring blood banks to refuse donations from people who were born in or who emigrated from Haiti and sub-Saharan Africa.
