DIESEL FUEL SPILLED INTO NEW JERSEY RIVER

Environmental crews early today kept watch on a fuel spill caused when a barge exploded in a spectacular column of flame in a channel separating New Jersey from New York City.

The spill, the result of Tuesday afternoon's blast and blaze aboard a barge carrying 4.2 million gallons of diesel fuel, left a slick spreading from the smoldering hulk, but the amount spilled was not immediately known. One person was injured.
