NORTON, RACHEL P. BLUEFIELD, W.VA. - Rachel Porterfield Perkins Norton, of Bluefield, W. Va., died Thursday, March 8, 1990, at her home, 2116 Mountain View Ave., following a brief illness. A native of Wytheville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Amanda Huffard and John Lilburn Porterfield. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James E. Perkins and William C. Norton. Mrs. Norton was active in civic and social affairs in Bluefield. She was a charter member of the Mercer County Committee of the National Society of Colonial DAmes of America in West Virginia. She was a charter member of the East River Mountain Garden Club and had been very active in Bluefield's Main Street Project. In addition to her daughters, Jeanette Perkins Jarrett, of the home, and Rachel Perkins Parsons, Miami, Fla., her survivors include her brother, John B. Porterfield, Mount Vernon, N.Y., and her grandson, Edward B. Jarrett III, Bluefield, W. Va. A brief funeral service will be held at the home at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with the Rev. Thomas Sprole and the Rev. Robert Goodrich officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in the East End Cemetery, Wytheville. Friends may call at the home Friday, March 9, between the hours of 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Rachel Porterfield Perkins Norton Scholarship and Memorial Fund care of Flat Top National Bank, Bluefield, W. Va., or the charity of your choice. Mercer Funeral Home of Bluefield, W. Va., is in charge of the arrangements.
