PIERCE AIDE TO TESTIFY, FOR IMMUNITY

The chairman of a congressional subcommittee investigating scandals at the Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday it will grant immunity to a former HUD official in exchange for "relevant new information."

Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., said DuBois Gilliam, a former HUD assistant secretary serving an 18-month sentence for manipulating and profiting from awarding HUD grants, has agreed to testify about the activities of former HUD secretary Samuel R. Pierce Jr. and others.

Gilliam was assistant secretary for community planning and development from 1984 to 1987.

Lantos said that he expects Gilliam to answer questions that Pierce and four of his former aides refused to answer, during public hearings, opting instead to use the Fifth Amendment as a shield against self-incrimination. The Washington Post
