NOMINEE APPROVED FOR CIVIL RIGHTS POSITION

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to approve the nomination of former New York state Sen. John Dunne to be assistant attorney general for civil rights.

The voice vote came one day after the committee grilled Dunne on his lack of civil rights experience, membership in clubs that excluded women and stock holdings in a company that does business in South Africa.

Only one committee member, Sen. Howard Metzenbaum, D-Ohio, voted against Dunne's confirmation. - Associated Press
