STRIKE CALLED ILLEGAL; TEACHERS CAN BE FIRED

The state attorney general declared West Virginia's first teacher strike illegal Thursday as the walkout spread to more than half the schools in the state.

Attorney General Roger Tompkins warned teachers they could be suspended for a year, fired or charged with a misdemeanor for walking off the job.

Despite that warning and the governor's refusal to hold talks until they go back to class, the 16,000-member teachers' union voted to walk out in 20 more counties Thursday and in six more by Monday if the Legislature fails to vote them a pay raise. The union initially went on strike Wednesday in 10 counties.
