EX-WASHINGTON OFFICIAL FILES LIBEL LAWSUIT

A former member of the Washington County Board of Supervisors has filed a $500,000 libel suit against a local weekly newspaper.

James McCall, a current member of the Washington County Industrial Development Authority, contends in the suit filed Wednesday in Circuit Court that his reputation was permanently damaged by a series of news articles, editorials and editorial cartoons in the Abingdon Virginian.

The suit asks for $250,000 in compensatory damages and another $250,000 in punitive damages. McCall's lawsuit pertains to alleged editorial attacks in the last year.

Martha Weisfeld, the newspaper's editor, and her husband, Charles Weisfeld, the newspaper's publisher, are named as co-defendants.

Martha Weisfeld said Wednesday she had not yet received official notification of the lawsuit. - Associated Press
