FORMER SUPERVISOR FILES LIBEL LAWSUIT

A former member of the Washington County Board of Supervisors has filed a $500,000 libel suit against a local weekly newspaper.

James McCall, a current member of the Washington County Industrial Development Authority, contends in the suit filed Wednesday in Circuit Court that his reputation was permanently damaged by a series of news articles, editorials and editorial cartoons in the Abingdon Virginian.

The suit asks for $250,000 in compensatory damages and another $250,000 in punitive damages. McCall's lawsuit pertains to alleged editorial attacks attacks in the last year.
