STRIKING TEACHERS FACE THREAT OF FIRING

The state attorney general declared West Virginia's first teacher strike illegal, and the governor declined an offer for a 48-hour cooling off period.

Attorney General Roger Tompkins Thursday warned teachers they could be suspended for a year, fired or charged with a misdemeanor for walking off the job.

Gov. Gaston Caperton turned down an offer by the state Board of Education for a 48-hour cooling-off period for him, the legislature and teachers. On Wednesday, he said he would not hold talks until teachers return to the classroom and "calm and reason are restored."
