BUSH LAUDS WARNER ON ARMS CONTROL

President Bush told a Republican fund-raising audience Thursday that Sen. John Warner's re-election is critical to helping steer new arms agreements with the Soviets through the Democratic-led Senate.

"He's helping arms control get done, but done right" in the Senate, Bush said. Warner, 63, serves as senior Republican on the Armed Services Committee.

Bush was flying by helicopter to this nearby Virginia suburb to speak at a dinner for Warner's re-election campaign

Bush said Warner, who was Navy secretary from 1972-74, "is one of the few members of the Senate who once negotiated an executive, national security agreement with the Soviets. And I'm looking for him to help guide new treaties and new budgets through this new decade of unprecedented change."
