UVA REFORMS

THE HIGH-PROFILE woes of intercollegiate athletics (see editorial above) shouldn't make people forget the real purposes of a university.

At the University of Virginia (whose basketball program, we might add, has remained in high ethical repute under the leadership of departing Coach Terry Holland), the board of visitors last month approved 14 resolutions dealing with undergraduate academic life.

Among the initiatives: a training program for graduate students who teach undergraduate classes; caps on the number of courses taught by such graduate students rather than full-fledged faculty; and bonuses for faculty willing to teach more but smaller classes.

We mention these things in part as illustrations of the sort of concerns that ought to be central to any university. But we mention them also because they came about at the prodding of a Roanoker, James L. Trinkle. Trinkle, who recently completed the maximum eight years as a UVa visitor, deserves a round of applause.
