COAL GROUP PLEDGES MONEY FOR SVCC

Island Creek Coal Co. has pledged $150,000 toward Southwest Virginia Community College's capital fund-raising campaign.

"SVCC has made continuing education a reality for a large number of Island Creek employees and their families," said S.O. "Bud" Ogden, the corporation's chairman and chief executive officer.

The pledge will be paid over five years. The first payment of $30,000 has already been made.

Funding will help support construction of the college's Center for Health and Community Development. So far, the college has raised $2.2 million toward its campaign goal of $5.1 million.

Island Creek, based in Oakwood in Buchanan County, employs about 1,400 people at four Southwest Virginia mines.
