SUGGS FINISHES 4TH IN RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Navy senior Will Suggs, whose family moved to Roanoke this year from Clarion, Pa., finished fourth in the NCAA Rifle Championships on Friday.

Navy's team captain was among three shooters who finished smallbore with scores of 1164, one point behind the champion, Florida State's Michelle Scarborough. Using the number of inner 10's hit on the targets as a tiebreaker, Suggs finished fourth.

Suggs was Navy's lone qualifier in air rifle, finishing 13th overall with a score of 384. In addition to Suggs' fourth-place showing in smallbore rifle, other Midshipmen who competed in the individual championship included freshman John Campbell, who finished 17th with 1147, and junior Guy Coursey, who was 30th at 1116.

Scarborough became the fifth two-time individual champion in the history of the NCAA Rifle Championships as she scored 1165 in smallbore shooting. Scarborough won the air rifle individual competition last year with an NCAA-record score of 399.

In air rifle, West Virginia's Gary Hardy scored 393 out of a possible 400, beating three other shooters who scored 392. Hardy's victory gives West Virginia an individual champion in nine of the past 10 years. Last year was the exception. - Associated Press
