The actor, who portrays detective Virgil Tibbs, said his addictions drove him to consider suicide just three days before Christmas.
He said he took his last drug on Dec. 28 but he still has a constant craving for it, he said in an interview published in the March 17 issue of TV Guide magazine.
Rollins said he was only an occasional user when he landed the Tibbs role in 1987, but was hopelessly addicted within six months.
Ringo Starr's five-carat diamond ring worth more than $172,000, turned up recently in a jewelry shop in Paris and police said the jewelry shop owner and the man who sold him the ring will face unspecified criminal charges.
French police said that Starr lost the ring after a concert in Paris last October. The ring surfaced a few weeks ago at a jewelry shop, sold to the owner by a man who said he did not know it belonged to the rock star, police said.
The ring has been returned to Starr. Police said the ring passed "through several persons" before getting to the jewelry shop.
John Mellencamp wants to buy a hotel in his hometown if the city cannot afford to renovate it, his father says.
Richard Mellencamp said his rock singer son has shown interest in buying the Lynn Hotel in Seymour, Ind. "We will renovate it and lease it back to the city for city offices," the elder Mellencamp said.
The singer this week gave permission for his musical tribute to rural life, "Small Town," to be used by the tourism division of the Indiana Department of Commerce in its summer marketing campaign.
Steven Spielberg apparently beat out other bidders, including Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand, when he bought a Southwestern-style retreat atop Malibu bluffs in California.
The three-acre, gated lot includes 285 feet of private beach on this area's star-studded shores.
Spielberg, who directed "E.T.," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Jaws," purchased the property through a trust for $6 million, public records show. It had been up for rent at $25,000 a month.
The four-bedroom house, surrounded by lush lawns, has a master suite with a spa and full gym.
