A graduate of Jefferson High School, Echols joined the postal service in 1933 and was assistant postmaster from 1965 until his retirement in 1974.
He also served in the Navy for 10 years during World War II and the Korean conflict as a mail clerk in Maryland, San Francisco and Okinawa, Japan and as a cryptographer, deciphering codes on an aircraft carrier.
He rejoined the Roanoke post office in 1952 and was promoted to foreman of mails and services analyst before being named assistant postmaster.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Graly Echols, and a sister, Beryl Echols Levy of Roanoke.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
