DALKON PAYOFFS MAY TAKE 5 YEARS

The director of a $2.5 billion trust fund to compensate victims of the Dalkon Shield birth control device says it will take about five years for the trust to complete its work.

"But it could go longer," said Michael M. Sheppard, whose Dalkon Shield Claimants Trust on Thursday will mail out almost 111,000 packets explaining the options available to women seeking compensation for injuries caused by the intrauterine device.

Sheppard said the trust already has settled about 85,000 claims, paying $57 million.

The fund was part of the reorganization of the A.H. Robins Co., a Richmond-based pharmaceutical manufacturer that sold the IUD worldwide in the early 1970s. Robins filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in August 1985 under a wave of lawsuits claiming Dalkon Shield injuries. - Associated Press
