FITZGERALD A 1ST TEAM ALL-GROUP AAA CHOICE

William Fleming's Joe Fitzgerald was named to the Associated Press' 1989-90 All-Group AAA basketball team announced Monday.

Also named to the first team in balloting by Virginia sportswriters were Kendrick Warren of Central Region champion Thomas Jefferson, Grant Hill of state semifinalist South Lakes, Darrell Paul of Deep Creek and Aaron Mundy of Hampton.

Fitzgerald, the Roanoke Valley District player of the year, was the only junior named to the first team. The 6-foot-6 center averaged 22.9 points and 17.2 rebounds and shot 62.7 percent from floor.

Mundy, a 6-7 senior, averaged 16 points a game for the Crabbers, regular-season winners of the Peninsula District but a loser to Bayside in the state tournament final. Also an all-state defensive lineman, Mundy has signed to play football at Virginia.

Warren, a 6-8 senior who averaged 26.5 points, 12.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks a game, was named player of the year. Warren also earned fourth-team Parade All-America honors.

Hill, a 6-8 senior guard who won third-team Parade All-America honors and averaged 28.4 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals, has signed to play basketball at Duke.

Paul averaged 21 points, 4.4 steals and 5.3 assists per game. The 6-foot senior guard shot 53.4 percent from the floor and 69 percent from the line.

Wendell Byrd, who guided South Lakes to its third consecutive Great Falls District title and a 25-4 record, was voted coach of the year. - Associated Press
