The applicants include a former teacher, a former principal and coach, a former School Board member and a Parent Teacher Association leader.
Monday was the deadline for applications.
The seats are held by William White and Sallye Coleman, whose terms end June 30.
White, who has been on the board for five years, is running for City Council in the May election and won't seek a new term.
Coleman, a board member for six years and current vice chairman, has applied for a new term.
After reviewing the applications, council will hold public interviews with up to three applicants for each seat. Council will interview the applicants on April 12 and make the appointments in May.
The other applicants are:
Charles Day, a former principal, teacher and coach in the city school system. Day, who is now in real estate sales, taught and coached at Addison High School, was a principal at Loudon Elementary and Ruffner Junior High and an associate principal at Patrick Henry High. Day, 56, has a bachelor's degree from Virginia State University and a master's degree from Radford University.
John Geary, a retired postal worker who works in the Lewis-Gale Clinic's security department. Geary, 70, is a graduate of Jefferson High School and studied law for two years at LaSalle University.
David Lisk, a former School Board member and a former City Council member. Lisk, 62, served on the board from 1985 to 1988. He was a councilman from 1966 to 1976. Lisk, a life insurance salesman, attended the University of Rochester.
Delvis "Mac" McCadden, a former teacher who is now district sales manager for USAir. McCadden, who did not give his age on his application, has a bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech and has done graduate work at the University of Virginia Extension. McCadden, a member of the city Library Board, also works as a baseball umpire.
Finn Pincus, director of the Electronic Computer Programming Institute. Pincus, 34, has a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and master's degrees from Virginia Tech in business administration and also counseling and student personnel.
Denise Reedy, a housewife and PTA leader. Reedy, 43, is a graduate of William Fleming High School. She has been a member of the city Central PTA Council's board of directors.
Emanuel Edwards, a lawyer, and Lewis Peery, a retired Postal Service worker, applied earlier.
Coleman, a retired administrator in the city school system, has a bachelor's degree from Virginia State University. She has done graduate work at the University of Virginia, New York University and Interamerican University.
