JUDGE TOUGH ON TEEN FOR THREATS TO TEACHER

A family court judge has given the strictest possible sentence to a 14-year-old special education student who was found guilty of threatening a school instructor with a gun.

Judge Dale Harris sentenced the unidentified youth to the authority of the state Department of Corrections. The department, rather than the court, determines the length of sentences for juveniles.

Harris also recommended that the Dunbar Middle School student be placed in a residential treatment center after his release.

The juvenile was found guilty Feb. 12 of carrying a concealed weapon, brandishing a firearm, carrying a weapon on school grounds and trespassing on school grounds.

During court testimony in February, William Seigel, E.C. Glass High School athletic trainer and instructor, said he was on his way home Jan. 29 when he heard the juvenile using vulgar language in the school parking lot.

Seigel said he asked the juvenile and two other youths to leave school grounds.

Seigel said the juvenile responded, "I ought to slap your head," and raised his hand in the air. He said the juvenile then pulled a .22-caliber pistol from his jacket and said, "Make my day."
