AMSTERDAM GUITAR TRIO TO PLAY OLIN HALL

"Pipa," a work by contemporary Japanese composer Akira Nishimura, will receive its American premiere Monday in Olin Hall.

The occasion will be a concert by the Amsterdam Guitar Trio, appearing under the auspices of the Roanoke Valley Chamber Music Society.

The performance begins at 8 p.m.

Also on the program are Nikita Koshkin's "Zapateado," Chiel Meijering's "Two Men and a Lady," and guitar transcriptions of Claude Debussy's Petite Suite, Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1 in D (Op. 25), and Isaac Albeniz's "El Corpus in Sevilla."

The Amsterdam Guitar Trio was founded in 1978 by three students at Amsterdam's Sweelinck Conservatory. They are Johan Dorrestein, Olga Franssen and Helenus de Rijke.

Edith Leerkes is replacing Franssen on the trio's current American tour.

The ensemble specializes in contemporary works and in transcriptions. It has premiered dozens of new pieces since its founding, and its transcriptions include recordings of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and Bach's "Brandenburg" Concertos.

The trio typically dresses casually, and concertgoers are encouraged to follow suit.

Monday's concert will be previewed by Peter Golloday at 7:30 p.m. in Room 325 at Olin Hall. Golloday is guitar instructor at Radford University.

Tickets to the concert are $10 for adults and $3 for students. They can be reserved through the Olin Hall box office at 375-2333 or bought at the door.
