Recreation director Robert Dowless said the grant would be split between the city and state, with Radford paying 25 percent. He said the money would be used to improve the existing boat ramp and access road. Money would be used to build an asphalt parking lot and to install a security light.
Council at Monday's meeting voted 2-3 against the request, giving the cost of the project as the reason. ". . . I can support a smaller amount, but not $47,000," Mayor Tom Starnes said.
Dowless said the expense is to construct a maintenance-free access. He said the Recreation Commission believes a cheaper alternative would require too much maintenance.
Council members Polly Corn and Guy Wohlford also voted against the request. Wohlford said he wouldn't feel comfortable spending this much money out of next year's budget when there are higher-priority projects.
Council approved the amount offered by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 21 to complete a new city dog pound. The lodge offered $7,000 to help pay for the pound because it wants to buy the land on which the old pound is located.
Maj. Johnny Butler, lodge president, said the land on Pulaski Street would be used as the site for a lodge house. He said the $7,000 would be paid either in money or in materials and labor.
