The other honorees are Bob Hentzen, sports editor of the Topeka, Kan., Capital-Journal; Bob Hammel, sports editor of the Bloomington, Ind., Herald-Telephone, and Bob Vetrone, sports information director at LaSalle and formerly a sportswriter with the Philadelphia Bulletin.
This is the third year of the USBWA Hall of Fame. Brill, Hentzen and Hammel are the first active writers to be selected. There now are 13 members in the honor group.
Brill, 58, has been with the Roanoke newspaper since 1956. He became sports editor of the Roanoke Times in 1960 and executive sports editor of the all-day paper in 1980. He formerly worked 3 1/2 years with the Covington Virginian, where he was the sports editor.
Brill was president of the USBWA in 1980-81 and twice was president of the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. He received the service to sports award from the Virginia Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association in 1967.
A native of Philadelphia, Brill has lived in Virginia since he was 7. He attended Christchurch School, near the family home in Middlesex County, and graduated from Duke University in 1952.
Brill wrote "Duke Basketball: An Illustrated History" in 1986. At the time, it was the first college basketball history ever published.
The Hall of Fame selections were announced by Joe Mitch, USBWA secretary.
