OIL DEMAND DOWN; IMPORTS RISE ANYWAY

Demand for oil dropped 6.7 percent in February, compared with the month a year earlier, the American Petroleum Institute reported Wednesday. But production fell even faster, so imports rose, according to the report.

The institute said 16.6 million barrels a day were supplied in February, down 1.2 million barrels a day from February 1989. It attributed the drop to warmer weather and other factors.

Production of oil was down 6.9 percent, the institute said. As a result, imports were 8 million barrels a day, up from 7.8 million barrels last year but below the January figure of about 9 million.

Imports accounted for 48 percent of demand. - The New York Times
