LANDMARK SETS EXECUTIVE CHANGES

Landmark Communications Inc., parent of the Roanoke Times & World-News, has announced the appointment of Robert D. Benson as president and publisher of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star of Norfolk.

Benson, president and publisher of the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record and a former president of the Roanoke Times & World-News, will be responsible for all operations of the Norfolk newspapers, Landmark president and chief executive Richard F. Barry said Tuesday.

Benson will succeed Carl Mangum as president, in charge of all business operations, and Barry as publisher, overseeing news and editorial departments. Barry said he is relinquishing his post to devote full time to his duties as Landmark's chief executive.

The changes will be effective March 26.

Mangum, president and general manager of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star since 1980, will succeed Benson as president and publisher of the News & Record.

Donald Patterson, vice president and business manager of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, will become executive vice president of Landmark. He will oversee most corporate staff activities, including finance, accounting, treasury, management information, human resources and corporate communications.

Frank Batten Jr., director of marketing and associate publisher of the newspapers, will become vice president and associate publisher, responsible for marketing and promotion, circulation and the business departments of the newspapers.
