It proved to be little more than a glorified exhibition game - on the ice and in the stands (the crowd was a season-low 853) - as the Lancers plastered the listless Monarchs 10-2 Wednesday night at the LancerLot in Vinton.
"This game was absolutely no indication of what we'll see in the playoffs," said Dave Allison, Virginia's coach. "This game was a wash. Just a nothing game for both sides."
It was a night to pad the statistics for the Lancers, who scored a season-high 10 goals.
"There were a lot of people with some personal goals they wanted to reach," Allison said. "I can't tell them not to play hard, not to try to score."
"We just went out and had some fun tonight," defenseman Bill Whitfield said.
Virginia led 3-1 after one period, 7-1 after two. The Lancers tacked on a field goal in the third period to reach double digits.
Eleven Lancers scored a point in their most lopsided victory of the season.
The onslaught was paced by a group of newcomers. Shannon Travis, in his first game after being reassigned from Milwaukee (IHL), had a goal and four assists; Ron Jones, in his second game with Virginia, contributed a goal and three assists; Wayne Muir, in his ECHL debut, had a goal and two assists, and Marty Rouse, back with the club on an emergency basis, had two goals and an assist.
"The biggest thing was to get ready for the playoffs," Allison said. "We wanted to go in on a good note.
"It was a good day for me all around. I got my dog [who had run away from the LancerLot Wednesday morning] just before the game, then we got some scoring back."
The third-place Lancers (36-24) and fourth-place Monarchs (29-31) begin their best-of-five series Friday at the LancerLot.
\ ICE CHIPS: The Lancers skated with a makeshift lineup that included two players - forwards Bill Gutenberg and Rouse - who are not on the 17-man playoff roster. . . . Allison said that flashy forwards Chris Lindberg and Terry Menard, who helped the Lancers move into first place before both were recalled last month, are expected back for the playoffs. Also, forward Graham Stanley will be back. His jaw is not broken as was believed earlier. . . . Forward Marco Fuster served the first game of a three-game suspension for Sunday's post-game fracas with Winston-Salem's John Devereaux, who also received an unwanted three-game vacation. . . . In 30 home games, the Lancers drew an ECHL-low 52,550 fans, an average of 1,752. Greensboro 101-2 Virginia 343-10
