PROTESTS END BAN ON SHORTS AT TWO SCHOOLS

Student protests at two Roanoke Valley schools stemming from the heat this week caused school officials at Northside Junior High and Patrick Henry High to take another look at their policies on shorts.

At Northside Junior High, the shorts ban was overturned Wednesday after students staged a demonstration and wore shorts to school despite having been told it was against the rules.

"I know the times are a lot more informal than they used to be with the adult world as well as with students, and personally I feel that this is a good time to re-look at things," Northside Junior High Principal James Wood said.

A number of Patrick Henry High School students were sent home Monday for violating their school's dress code, which prohibits shorts between October and May.

The policy, which was instituted last year by student request, was changed Tuesday.

"We certainly do not object to shorts, as long as they're the knee-length shorts," Patrick Henry Principal Elizabeth Lee said. "We want the students to be comfortable when they're here in school."
