The petition, bearing 641 signatures from N.C. State faculty and staff, was presented by Harold Coble, a professor of crop science, and seven Wolfpack players.
"We were just trying to express that there is support on campus for Coach Valvano," Coble said. "In the past, there has been the impression that there is no support on campus and that is not the case.
Coble said the petition was not meant to affect Monteith's decision on Valvano's status at the school .
"The petition was not distributed in an effort to sway any opinions on campus," he said. "The decision is left to Dr. Monteith. Certainly, we don't want to try to influence that decision unduly." - Associated Press
