The presentation is a part of the church's annual fine arts series. It will feature eight soloists, a 35-voice chorus and an orchestra, all under the direction of Richard Cummins.
Cummins is director of music at the church and head of the fine arts series.
Haydn's mass was written in the summer of 1799 for the wife of his patron, Nicolaus II of Hungary, and is thought to have been first performed that September. It came between the oratorios, "The Creation" and "The Seasons," and is regarded as one of the composer's greatest sacred works.
Soloists for the Greene Memorial performance will be Jayne Levesque Vest, Rita Cummins and Gerry LoMascolo, sopranos; Charlene Landes and Jean Rakes, altos; Joe Gaskey, tenor; and Robert Snead and William Snyder, basses.
The 16-piece orchestra for the performance is drawn mostly from the Roanoke Symphony. It includes the concertmaster, James Glazebrook, and all members of the Roanoke Symphony Quintet. The Greene Memorial United Methodist Church Fine Arts Series will continue April 29 with a performance by the Audubon Quartet, the internationally known ensemble which is in residence at Virginia Tech.
