BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT INAUGURATED

Fernando Collor de Mello took office Thursday as Brazil's first popularly elected president in 29 years, and promised free-market style reforms and an "unconditional war" on record inflation.

"The most important target of my first year in office is not to tame inflation, but to liquidate it," the conservative new president said. He spoke for about 45 minutes to Brazilian leaders and dignitaries representing 121 countries.
