INVESTMENT URGED IN EASTERN EUROPE

Deputy Secretary of State Lawrence S. Eagleburger urged U.S. businesses Thursday to invest in Eastern Europe for private profit and the public interest.

Speaking to more than 600 bankers and exporters at a conference sponsored by the Eximbank, Eagleburger extolled the prospects for American business in those countries turning away from command economies to more open markets.

"Profit you will" in Eastern Europe, he said, where there is "a well-educated and low-wage work force" and a receptivity to American commercial engagement.

"If we are going to . . . be in a position to advance our vital interests in the region, we will need a strong commercial presence" in Eastern Europe, he said. - The Baltimore Sun
