BILL WOULD RAISE CIGARETTE TAXES

U.S. Rep. Rod Chandler introduced a bill Thursday that would more than double the federal cigarette tax in some states but implement much smaller increases in others that already have high taxes, including Chandler's home state of Washington.

Tobacco states with the lowest state cigarette taxes would be hit hardest by Chandler's proposal. Virginia, with a 2.5-cent state tax, would pay 23.75 cents per pack more in federal taxes.

The proposal would raise $2.6 billion to $3 billion to finance federal income-tax deductions for workers who must buy their own health insurance. - Associated Press
