OFFICER'S SON GETS LIFE TERM

The son of a Norfolk policeman has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 1988 shooting death of a convenience store clerk.

Darrell Craig Sumrell, 24, the leader of the "Nightstalker" gang, pleaded guilty last week to capital murder, first-degree murder and several armed robbery charges. Under Virginia law, a felon cannot be paroled if he is convicted of three or more armed robberies, rapes or murders.

Sumrell was also sentenced to three life terms plus 266 years in prison for 26 other felony convictions.

Daniel Barben, 22, a clerk at a Get It and Go convenience store, was shot in the face with a sawed-off shotgun by Sumrell on Nov. 6, 1988. - Associated Press
