NEW COMMUNICATION PERSONNEL APPROVED FOR RADFORD BUDGET

City Council approved items to be placed in the 1990-91 budget Thursday, including two additional workers to operate Radford's Communication Center.

Police Chief A.C. Earles asked for five additional communication officers earlier so two could be on duty at all times. Council decided two more workers would be enough.

The two communication officers will work during busy portions of a shift. This would allow for an officer to work part of one shift and part of another. Council budgeted $42,200 for the entry-level jobs.

Another Police Department request that was granted was a new meter-reading vehicle. Council approved $8,000 for the vehicle, which would be used in ticketing illegally parked cars. The Sheriff's Department wasn't as fortunate. Council denied Sheriff Bobby Farmer's request for a new vehicle to transport inmates.

Council noted that the items approved Thursday are subject to change following a meeting with the School Board March 26. City employees who are not funded by the state will receive a raise. Council approved a 5 percent raise for these employees in the 1990-91 budget totaling $201,437.

Council approved the recreation department's purchase of a new vehicle to replace the 1978 station wagon it uses now. Council budgeted $10,000 for this request.

Council also approved $12,000 to repair tennis courts in Bisset Park. The request by the recreation commission for $25,000 to widen the jogging trail in Bisset Park will be examined longer.

The Radford Health Department was denied a supplemental request of $19,698 to expand popular programs, such family planning and a parent-infant care program. However, Council did approve the health department's lowest total budget request of $62,410.

No additional money was approved for the Planning Commission, leaving its request at $6,054. Council granted this amount.

The New River Valley Detention Home got its budget request of $28,260. Council also approved the supplemental request of $6,016, which is based on use of the home.

Council granted $100,000 to be placed in the 1990-91 budget for new street construction.

The Department of Welfare and Social Services was granted money for an additional employee to serve as a child protective services worker. Council will pay 20 percent, $4,451, for this position while the state pays 80 percent.

Council did approve the $64,663 requested by the commonwealth's attorney, plus $3,600 to go toward rent.
