Don Reid, C&P Telephone manager, said extended area calling would mean that residents of the Stone Mountain (297) exchange in the Smith Mountain Lake area could call Roanoke numbers at 20 percent of the rate they now pay. There would be an additional monthly charge for the service, but Reid said people who make more than a couple of calls to Roanoke a month would save on their bill.
There are about 4,000 C&P customers in the lake area, which also is served by Centel Telephone Co. and Peoples Mutual.
If 297 exchange residents get the service, Roanoke phone customers would enjoy the same reduced calling rates with no additional monthly charge.
To implement the service, ballots would be mailed to all Stone Mountain customers and approval would have to be by a majority. The proposal then would go to the State Corporation Commission for approval.
Reid said the earliest that the service could be offered would be late fall or early winter.
