NAIA PLAYER SETS SCORING MARK

Philip Hutcheson of David Lipscomb University became college basketball's all-time scoring leader Friday night as the top-seeded Bisons routed Pfeiffer 125-83 in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Tournament.

The Bisons (41-4), the only college team to win 40 games in a season, will face fourth-seeded Birmingham-Southern in Saturday's semifinals.

Hutcheson scored 23 points to hike his four-year total to 4,064. His second field goal of the game tied the mark of 4,045 set in 1969-72 by Travis "Machine Gun" Grant of Kentucky State.

Hutcheson, a 6-foot-8 senior, hit a running 5-foot hook shot in the lane to snap the record and tie the game 19-19. After play was halted for half court ceremonies presenting Hutcheson with the ball, the Bisons went on a 15-3 tear and began pulling away from the Falcons of Misenheimer, N.C.

David Lipscomb, a liberal arts school in Nashville, Tenn., mounted a 61-40 halftime lead. and fell only seven points short of the tournament one-game scoring record. They also set an NAIA record with 16 3-point goals.
