COURT ORDERS TEACHERS BACK IN JUST ONE COUNTY

The state Supreme Court on Friday upheld a lower court's order that striking teachers in one county return to work, but it later overrode another judge's attempt to issue a statewide back-to-work order.

Union officials said the 10-day-old strike would continue.

Early in the day, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court order that striking teachers in Jefferson County go back to work. The high court said circuit judges had the right to order teachers to work on a county-by-county basis.

Minutes after Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge John Hey issued an injunction ordering a statewide return to classrooms, however, the high court voted 4-0 to stay Hey's ruling. The state's two teacher unions contended the state must seek injunctions in each of the 55 counties. - Associated Press
