Working within the confines of its deliberate ball-control attack Saturday, W&L generated 24 shots. Problem was, the Generals didn't get much to show for them.
Roanoke's defense wasn't lulled to sleep by W&L's patience. The Maroons shut out the Generals for more than 22 minutes, built a big lead and withstood a fourth-quarter rally for an 11-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.
Senior attack Will Goldthwait scored three goals and had two assists and David Dyson and Graham Callaway added two scores each as Roanoke continued its mastery over its biggest rival. The Maroons haven't lost a regular season game to the Generals since 1983.
The victory against the 20th-ranked Generals improved the Maroons' record to 2-3 and put Roanoke back in the hunt for a Division III playoff berth.
"We were down and they were up," said Bill Pilat, Roanoke's coach. "We really needed this. We couldn't take another loss. W&L is a very good team. We're happy to beat them."
Roanoke won, Pilat said, because it wasn't frustrated by the Generals' game plan.
"We knew they'd be real patient on offense," Pilat said. "They pass and pass and try to lull you. Then when you get a little antsy and try and force something, they run right by you. We wanted to outpatience Washington and Lee."
The strategy worked. Although the Generals were spending two to three minutes working the ball around the perimeter of Roanoke's zone defense, they rarely found openings for good shots at the goal.
Maroons defenders Steve Hoffman, Dan Morrison and Mark Lawrence clogged the shooting lanes, and W&L took just four shots in the first of the four 15-minute quarters.
Meanwhile, Roanoke's attack was clicking.
By taking advantage of some timely fast-break opportunities to go with their normal offensive sets, the Maroons jumped to an 8-0 lead before Wiemi Douoguih put the Generals on the scoreboard with a goal at 6:24 of the second quarter.
"We didn't come out to play," said Washington and Lee coach Jim Stagnitta. "I don't know how you can come out not ready to play against Roanoke. They out-hustled us. They got all the ground balls.
"They certainly wanted it more than us in the first half."
It wasn't until after the midway point of the third quarter that the Generals, down 9-1, looked as if they were ready for action.
Five goals in a nine-minute span pulled W&L to 9-6 with 6:20 left in the game.
Then Dyson whipped in a wrist shot from 10 yards for Roanoke, and Callaway sealed the win with a goal at 3:58.
"I think some guys started to get excited and could see the win," Pilat said. "We just stuck with our offense and got the big goal."
