VA. WOMAN GETS $2 MILLION SETTLEMENT

A $2.8 million settlement for a Virginia woman whose husband died after inhaling carbon monoxide at a Nashville hotel may be Tennessee's largest, an attorney says.

Joan Spalding and her husband, John Spalding, of Falls Church, Va., were staying at a Ramada Inn on Nov. 23, 1968, when the noxious fumes leaked into their room, apparently from a heater located near the hotel's swimming pool.

John Spalding, 61, died in his sleep, while his wife reportedly suffered injuries that cause her to reside at a Virginia nursing home.

Attorney Randolph Smith said the settlement ends a federal court lawsuit filed in November 1987 against eight defendants, including the hotel, local contractors and architects.

"This spares her the trauma of re-living the nightmare," Smith said Friday. "Her husband died and she has a lot of memory of that."
