Washburn said he was surprised when Shackleford admitted he received money from an agent in violation of NCAA rules while playing for the Wolfpack. He also said he had no knowledge of point-shaving, allegations of which are being investigated by North Carolina officials.
Two-thirds of Shackleford's money came from Larry Gillman, a former East Carolina head coach who is now a sports agent in Ridgefield, Conn. Gillman represented Washburn when he turned professional in 1986, after his sophomore season at N.C. State. Shackleford was a freshman on that team.
