WYTHE TO RE-ENACT ITS FIRST COURT SESSION

Plans are under way for a re-enactment of Wythe County's first court session as part of the county's year-long bicentennial celebration.

That first session was held on May 25, 1790, to establish a county separate from Montgomery County and decide on a name for it. The re-enactment is tentatively scheduled for May 25 at Fort Chiswell High School.

Committees are being formed to handle budget requirements, set construction, costumes, casting, sound, lighting, historical research and script writing.

"If there's a touch of drama in your background," said Susan M. Thigpen, bicentennial committee publicity chairman, "come join in this activity. You might be a descendant of one of the original participants, which would make the event doubly special."

The committee is seeking help on the project from individuals and civic organizations. Information is available by telephoning Connie Joyce at 637-3437 days or 639-6269 evenings and weekends. - Southwest bureau
