GUNSHOT KILLS STUART RESIDENT; FRIEND CHARGED

A Stuart man was found dead on the living room floor of a friend's home Monday afternoon in Patrick County and authorities have charged the friend with murder.

Otis Lee Peck, 51, of the Dry Pond community in Stuart, was found about 3:30 p.m. at the home of Troy John Witt on Virginia 631, about a mile south of Stuart.

Patrick County deputies responded to a call from a neighbor about a possible shooting. Sheriff Jay Gregory said investigators found Peck with a loaded 16-gauge shotgun by his side.

Peck was dead when deputies arrived. Gregory said Peck died of an apparent shotgun blast to the upper left chest.

"It appears to have been one shot, but we won't know for sure until the medical examiner in Roanoke completes an autopsy," Gregory said.

Witt, 68, was home when deputies arrived and was taken into custody. He was later charged with murder and was being held at the Patrick County Jail in Stuart without bond.

Gregory said a second shotgun was found in Witt's bedroom and contained an empty 12-gauge shell.

"We're asking for tests to be run by the state crime lab in Roanoke," Gregory said. "But I believe that's the gun that killed the man."

Gregory wouldn't speculate on a motive.

"As far as I know they were acquaintances and friends, but as far as what was actually involved details are sketchy at this time and I really can't release any more on that."
