SMITHFIELD AGREES TO STUDY DISCHARGES

Smithfield Foods Inc. will have until October to decide how to meet new state standards for wastewater discharges under an agreement approved Monday by the state Water Control Board.

Under the agreement, Smithfield will study various technologies and costs of complying with the phosporous standard of 2 milligrams per liter of wastewater discharged into the Pagan River, which feeds into the Chesapeake Bay.

The company must report to the water board's staff by Oct. 1.

Smithfield also must study is whether it could connect its wastewater system to the Hampton Roads Sanitation District.
