EX-POLICE CHIEF'S DEATH RULED SUICIDE

The former police chief of Wytheville has committed suicide in a Roanoke park, authorities said Monday.

Warren Z. McAllister, 68, was found dead from a gunshot wound Saturday in Fishburn Park off Brambleton Avenue, authorities said.

Authorities determined that the shot was self-inflicted. No suicide note was found, police said.

McAllister resigned as police chief in Wytheville in 1983 after 22 years on the force, the last five as chief. He later moved to Roanoke.

McAllister said in 1983 that he was resigning because of health problems.
